After months of playtests, feedback, and revisions I have what I think is a vastly improved game. It's greatly simplified, offers multiple strategies for winning, and looks absolutely amazing when compared to the earlier version. Here's a summary of what's changed:
- Every single card in the game is completely unique. There is no duplicated artwork.
- There is a full color download for the cards.
- Sword cards have been simplified. Where as there were once two sets of rules for playing swords depending on if it was your own hydra or your opponent's now there is only one. They may be played on any hydra that has 2 or less cards adjacent to it. This allows for a strategy where you can try and block a torch in on another player's hydra.
- Torches are now worth -2 points at the end of the game.
- Slash And Burn! Replacing a card after using a sword to cut away a card is limited to torches only. This makes an offensive strategy very viable.
- Poison Breath Cards can now be used to block any sword, torch, or even other poison breath cards from being played on any player. This allows them to be used offensively as well as defensively.
- Labours have been dropped. They were a neat concept, but difficult to balance and explain. Something similar might be seen in a future expansion.
- The complete hydra bonus is back! Get a bonus 3 points if every neck on your hydra ends in a head.
- A new end game bonus was added for longest neck! Get a bonus 3 points if your hydra's neck is longer than all other players.
- Lose 1 point for each head still in your hand at the end of the game.
If you've played the previous versions, this version is worth printing again. The rules and cards updates make the game simpler and the strategy deeper. If you've never played the game before then I really hope you try this latest version! It's a fun little filler game for 2-4 players that takes 15 minutes to play.
